Stop, Look and Listen.
7.
Never give Up.
1.
Specific Thoughts: Anxiety about learning will hinder you.
Get the big picture before you fine tune.
Do not try to remember the steps, instead, experience the movement.
All dance connects to the body not the mind.
You have to stay physical and not be detail oriented in the beginning of new movement patterns.
2.
Focus: Focus is essential.
You have to be completely tuned in, and soak up everything.
Take a mental picture of everything.
When concentration wanes, refocus by taking a second to stop and look.
Be in the moment.
3.
Listening Skills: Listen to what is said about the given movement sequence.
Hearing is one way to learn the material.
Train yourself to listen to the instructions as well as seeing them.
4.
Be Part of the Movement: Get inside the movement.
Do not get caught up in the external manifestations.
Try to see with x-ray vision the real mechanics and physics, not the flourishes.
Get weight shifts, and direction changes.
Watch the hips or where the movement comes from.
Know where the movement comes from.
When in doubt look at the feet and then hips.
5.
Understand How You Learn: Understand your learning style.
Know how you learn best.
We all have different learning styles.
Does it help to see from a particular angle? Do you need to watch first without doing? Do you like to jump in and give it a shot right away? Do you need counts or do you prefer listening to the rhythm? Do you learn better on the right or the left? Do you need to ask questions or do you just try on your own? Figure out what works best for you then take control of your movement environment and get what you need.
6.
Stop, Look and Listen: Sometimes your best bet is to stop.
Do not watch as if you are watching a movie but as if you are doing the movement yourself.
You have to see and feel the whole picture plus hear the rhythm before you take a step.
7.
Never Give Up: Do not give up.
A quick head for combinations takes practice and persistence.
Picking up movements is like a muscle.
Hello muscle memory.
If you are studying a new technique or style it is harder to get.
it will take longer.
The way to get better is to keep doing it.
By following the above suggestions you will pick up those movements and sequences mush faster.
Try one at a time and see which ones help you most.
You might need only on.
Someone else maybe more.
