Prom Dress Etiquette

    Choose the Right Dress

    • A prom dress should make the girl feel pretty and flatter her figure. But a prom dress should also be appropriate for the occasion. The dress should adhere to any school or parental rules. Some schools will not allow a dress that is too short or that features a plunging neckline. It's courteous to adhere to school rules and to consult parents when choosing the dress.

    Who Pays for the Dress

    • Many modern prom girls pay for their dresses with their own money, whether it be from baby-sitting or working a part-time job. Traditionally, parents have contributed funds to help pay for the dress, but when budgets are tight, this rule does not apply. Though it is not expected of them, sometimes a date, his parents or the girl's grandparents will contribute to a dress fund.

    Corsage

    • A prom boy should consult with his date before choosing a corsage. It's proper to find out the girl's dress color prior to prom night so he can coordinate the corsage to his date's dress color. If the boy does not know his date's dress color, he should choose a neutral-colored flower like a white rose or carnation with a white ribbon.

    Other Prom Dress Etiquette

    • Several other points of etiquette apply to the prom dress. A girl can wear a wrap or shawl over a strapless gown. Remember to place a napkin in your lap when eating to help keep the dress clean looking. It's considered improper for a gentleman to ask to see his prom date's dress before the big night.
