How to Manage Pain With MS

    • 1). Take all medications as directed. Medications for this condition aim to relieve the various symptoms of MS, including pain. Being diligent about your medications will optimize their effects in managing symptoms. Be open and honest about your symptoms and any side effects you are having. This will help your doctor determine if another medication is better suited. Common treatments include corticosteroids, immunosuppressant medications and Interferon.

    • 2). Work with a physical therapist. He can show you exercises that can make you stronger, more flexible and can minimize pain. He can also show you ways to perform daily tasks to minimize pain and discomfort. Continue suggested treatments at home as directed by your physical therapist.

    • 3). Reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals in the body that promote and worsen pain. Alternative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil recommends the following things for his MS patients. Get most of your protein from soy, beans, whole grains and other non-animal sources. Reduce or eliminate milk products. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like cold-water fish, nuts and seeds. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables; they are rich in inflammation-fighting antioxidants. Take a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement; they contain the full spectrum of antioxidants in the suggested amounts.

    • 4). Experiment with alternative therapies. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends bromelain (40 mg daily) for MS pain. Acupuncture and massage might also be beneficial.

    • 5). Engage in regular, moderate physical activity if you have mild to moderate MS; it can relieve many symptoms. Talk to your doctor for advice in designing an appropriate regimen.
