How to Record a Landline Conversation

    Set Up Telephone Recording Adapter

    • 1). Connect one end of a telephone cable to the "Line" phone jack on the telephone recording adapter. Some telephone recording adapters come with the phone line cable already attached to the adapter. If this is the kind of adapter you're using, ignore this Step.

    • 2). Insert the other end of the phone line cable into a phone wall jack.

    • 3). Plug one end of another telephone cable into the "Tel" phone jack on the telephone recording adapter. Some telephone recording adapters come with the telephone cable already attached to the adapter. If this is the kind of adapter you're using, ignore this Step.

    • 4). Connect the other end of the telephone cable into the phone jack located on the base of the landline phone.

    • 5). Insert one end of a stereo cable into the telephone recording adapter's stereo output jack. Some telephone recording adapters come with the stereo cable already attached to the adapter. If this is the kind of adapter you're using, ignore this Step.

    • 6). Plug the other end of the stereo cable into the Line In jack on a computer. (Perform this Step only if you wish to use a computer to record your phone conversation. To use a cassette recorder, see the next Step).

    • 7). Plug the other end of the stereo cable into the stereo jack end of the stereo to RCA adapter. The other end of the adapter is outfitted with RCA plugs. Insert the adapter's red RCA plug into the cassette recorder's red RCA input jack. Insert the adapter's white RCA plug into the cassette recorder's white RCA input jack.

    Record Conversation Using a Computer

    • 1). Type "sound recorder" in the Start menu "Search" box. Click "Sound Recorder" in the search results to launch the Sound Recorder application.

    • 2). Place your phone call. Or pick up the phone to answer a call.

    • 3). Click "Start Recording" in the Sound Recorder application when you are ready to begin recording the conversation.

    • 4). Click "Stop Recording" in the Sound Recorder application when you are ready to end the recording.

    • 5). Type the name you want to use for the recorded audio file in the "File name" box. Navigate to the directory where you want the file to be saved. Click "Save."

    Record Conversation Using a Cassette Recorder

    • 1). Place your phone call. Or pick up the phone to answer a call.

    • 2). Press "Record" plus "Play" on the cassette recorder when you are ready to begin recording the conversation.

    • 3). Push "Stop" on the cassette recorder when you are ready to end the recording.
