- 1). Find the toilet's water shut-off valve. The shut-off valve, or stop valve, is usually located under the left side of the toilet tank and attached to a long metal or plastic water supply line. Turn the small shut-off valve handle clockwise to close off the water flowing into the toilet tank. Flush the toilet to confirm the water has stopped. Remove the Mansfield toilet tank lid and carefully set it to the side on a soft bath towel; toilet tank lids made of porcelain china are easily broken.
- 2). Remove the long rubber fill-valve refill tube from the top of the Mansfield flush valve tower in the center of the toilet tank. Gently rock the tube back and forth while pulling in an upward motion by hand only, do not use pliers, you can easily damage the tube. If the refill tube comes lose from the fill valve, it is OK; you can replace it when you are done.
- 3). Unscrew the Mansfield flush valve-stop located on the top of the valve. Rotate the round plastic top of the flush valve counterclockwise by hand. There is a minimal chance that you will break the flush valve raiser guide when you remove the valve stop. If this happens, you will need to replace the flush valve.
- 4). Lift the flush valve in a counterclockwise motion to remove it from the toilet tank and release the flush handle at same time. Take your flush valve to the hardware store, this the only way to purchase the correct o-rings for your valve.
- 5). Install several thick rubber o-rings on the top of the flush valve to add weight. Hold the flush valve securely in one hand. Roll the o-rings over the top of the flush valve about one inch. Do not add too many o-rings; you can over-weight the tower and the toilet will not flush correctly. Reassemble the flush valve in reverse order and turn the water back on. Test the toilet by flushing several times. If the toilet flushes too quickly, remove one o-ring at a time.
