- 1). Save any unsaved work and completely power off your Sony VAIO laptop. Unplug the VAIO's AC adapter and any other cables connected to any of the laptop's ports.
- 2). Check the open port where the Tab key would normally be positioned to see if the black plastic hinge is still on the keyboard. If the hinge is not present, check the bottom end of the Tab key to see if it is stuck to the underside of the key.
- 3). Pull the hinge out of the Tab key if it was stuck to the underside of the key. Set the hinge on the open port where the Tab key should be positioned.
- 4). Slide the small plastic hook at the bottom-right edge of the hinge into the small hole at the right side of the port. Push the plastic hook at the bottom-left edge of the hinge into the opposite hole on the left side of the port. If you have problems manipulating the hinge with your fingers, hold the piece steady with a pair of needle-nose pliers while you arrange the hooks.
- 5). Press down the top end of the hinge until it snaps into place in the open port. Position the tab key over the hinge on the open port. Push the left and right sides of the key at the same time to lock it onto the hinge.
