How to Use TV Satellite Dishes for Communications

    • 1). Place the jaws of a pair of pliers around the socket at the bottom of the TV satellite dish's receiver module. Rotate the pliers two turns counterclockwise to loosen the socket. Unscrew the socket with your fingers. Remove the coaxial cable that is connected to the socket.

    • 2). Insert one end of a USB extender cord into the USB socket at the bottom of the USB Wi-Fi adapter. Run a line of silicone paste around the socket. Let the paste set for 10 minutes.

    • 3). Place the USB Wi-Fi adapter against the top of the receiver module with its tip facing toward the dish. Position the adapter so that its tip overlaps the module by an inch or two.

    • 4). Run silicone paste over the entire surface of the adapter with the exception of the tip that is overlapping. Let the paste set for 10 minutes. Wrap a strip of silicone tape around the receiver over the back and front ends of the adapter.

    • 5). Loosen the bracket locking nuts on the back of the dish with an adjustable wrench. Adjust the vertical and horizontal positioning of the dish so that it is pointing in the general direction of your wireless home network. Alternately you can point the dish in the direction of a free-to-use Wi-Fi hotspot that is at a store or shop within sight. Tighten the nuts.

    • 6). Insert the free end of the USB extender cable into a USB port on a laptop.
