How to Install a CD/DVD Player on a Computer

    • 1). Determine what drive is right for you. The cheapest drives only read CD and DVD media. More expensive drives read and write CD/DVD media, and the most expensive drives read and write Blu-ray media. If you create music CDs or movie DVDs, consider getting one with both read and write capabilities. If you regularly watch movies on your computer, Blu-ray compatibility may be a good investment.

    • 2). Open your computer and determine its age. If it is from 2003 or before, it may require an older IDE or PATA drive. Serial ATA is the current standard, offering higher transfer rates and easier installation. If your motherboard doesn't support Serial ATA, purchase an inexpensive SATA to IDE adapter or install a SATA controller card.

    • 3). Physically install the drive. Find an empty drive bay, insert the CD/DVD player into the drive bay and secure it on each side with the screws provided. Sometimes this involves removing a drive bay cover and/or existing screws. Also make sure the front of the drive is flush with the front of the case so it doesn't look out of place. Do not over-tighten the screws; doing so may damage the drive.

    • 4). Hook up your drive. Serial ATA installation is quick and easy and only involves two cables. Simply attach the data cable (the smaller one) to one end of the CD/DVD drive and the other end to your motherboard's SATA controller. Attach the power SATA cable (the larger one) to one end of the drive and the other end to a SATA power connector from your power supply. Don't worry about making a mistake; SATA cables are keyed so they only fit one way, and jumper settings are configured automatically.

    • 5). Turn on your computer. Your BIOS should auto-detect the drive right away. Most BIOS drive settings are configured for you; modifying these are only recommended for advanced users. If it doesn't, enter the BIOS by pressing DEL or F1 during bootup, enable auto-detection of drives, and configure your drive manually if necessary.
