- 1). Turn the earth auger motor to the "Off" position. Lay the auger on its side on the ground and let it cool off. Put on leather work gloves.
- 2). Place one set of adjustable pliers on the auger bit retaining nut. Place a second set of adjustable pliers on the auger bit bolt. The nut and bolt are at the top of the auger bit just below the power head that contains the engine. Hold the bolt in position with one hand and turn the nut counterclockwise with the other hand.
- 3). Pull the nut and lock washer underneath it off the bit. Pull the bolt out of the auger bit bolt hole.
- 4). Pull the auger bit down and off the auger shaft.
- 5). Slide a new auger bit up onto the shaft while aligning the bolt holes. Insert the bolt into the bit and shaft. Place the lock washer on the protruding end of the bolt and place the retaining nut on the end. Tighten the retaining nut hand tight clockwise.
- 6). Place a set of adjustable pliers on the nut and the bolt. Hold the bolt in position and tighten the nut clockwise.
