- 1). Put on your gloves.
- 2). Hold your stick in both hands.
- 3). Place one hand on the butt (or top) of the stick, with your thumb pointing down.
- 4). Place your other hand a foot to a foot-and-a-half down the shaft of the stick, with your thumb pointing down.
- 5). Take a few forehand swings.
- 6). Reverse your hands and take another few forehand swings.
- 7). Ask yourself which swings felt more comfortable. This will be your primary grip, and will be used about 90 percent of the time you are playing.
- 8). Hold your top hand firmly on the shaft, but keep your bottom hand somewhat loose. You should be able to slide the bottom hand easily up and down the shaft.
- 9). Keep your stick low when playing, and never use it against another player.
