- Slot car racing has a specific set of rules that must be followed. A general set of rules for racers has been established, while specific rules for individual makes and classes are provided by each racing group. Car body alteration rules must be followed by all slot car racing participants.
- Slot car racing bodies can be painted and/or decorated. The chassis cannot be modified unless the specific class rules state differently. All slot cars must have the original interior. Exceptions to this rule will be given in the specific class rules. Hinged chassis bodies can have a small hole drilled into them to adjust the motor pod. Spacers may be added to two-piece chassis slot cars to help with the chassis hinge.
- The tires must be silicone or direct factory tires. The tires may be glued to achieve true center. The tie may also be beveled to achieve a true center but this cannot be done in excess. Copper or aluminum braids may be added. The wheel wells can be trimmed so the wheels have proper clearance. Wheel slop may be eliminated by the addition of spacers. Note that silicone tires may not be used in all classes.
- The slot car motor must be stock. The gear ratios cannot be changed. The magnet may be glued into place to make sure it will not drop off while the motor is running and the car is in play.
- All participants must be courteous to spectators, employees and other drivers. The slot car controller will be supplied by the racing establishment. The slot car racer must be on time to race, when it is his or her turn to be a Turn Marshall, and the racer must be signed in and paid before the first qualifying race. Qualifying racers will be determined after each run for the final race. Knocking another car off the track is not allowed. The first person across the finish line wins, so long has the driver has run the race legally.
