- 1). Learn how to pan for gold before you go. Consult a book and watch a video demonstration or take one of the classes available at a mining area.
- 2). Find a river or creek that flows from the the mountains. Search crevices along the river's banks and areas around obstacles such as boulders where the water slows down. Use a metal detector to pinpoint deposits of gold.
- 3). Fill your pan with water and gold-bearing sand or gravel. Agitate the pan to make the heavier gold sink to the bottom of the pan. Wash the lighter rocks and sand over the edge of the pan with a wavelike motion, taking care not to lose any flakes of gold. Pick out the visible nuggets of gold and save them in a vial. Repeat the process until the worthless materials are separated from the gold.
