- Pulmonic stenosis refers to birth defects in the heart that make it hard for blood to exit the right ventricle and enter the lungs. Stenosis in basset hounds is often the result of being born with a defective pulmonic valve.
- Not all bassets develop problems as a result of stenosis. Dogs that do may faint or show signs of arrhythmia or heart failure, especially when exercising.
- A vet may be able to detect a heart murmur through a stethoscope. Echocardiography or chest X-rays provide a more definite diagnosis.
- Some basset hounds may not need treatment. In more severe cases, vets may prescribe heart medication or recommend surgery.
- If your basset hound has congestive heart failure, avoid doing anything that would give them extra stress. Make sure they don't become too excited or exercise too much.
