- 1). Remove the low E string from its sleeve. Remove the plastic pin from the bridge piece. Insert the ball end of the string into the hole where the pin was located, and make sure the string is sitting in the groove on the left side with the guitar on your lap. Reinsert the pin with your thumb to hold the string in place.
- 2). Pull the other end of the string through the capstan located on the head stock. The capstan has a winding peg located on the back side of the head stock for tightening. Leave enough slack on the string to have a few windings on the capstan.
- 3). Bend the string on the other side the capstan hole. This will keep the string in place as you start to tighten it and will apply pressure so that the string does not come loose during the tightening process.
- 4). Tighten the string slowly with the tuner, making sure that the string is located on the side closest to you if the guitar is on your lap with the head stock to your left. You want the string to always be on the outside of the tuning peg or capstan.
- 5). After you have started tightening the string, place a string winder on the tuner, and crank in a clockwise motion quickly to get the string to tension, but do not over tighten, or you may cause damage to the guitar or break the string.
- 6). Clip the end of the string with wire cutters, close to the bend in the string. Many strings are made for extra-long scale guitars and often have a few extra inches that you will not need. Remove the excess string, as it may get caught on the lining of your case or on clothing.
