- 1). Purchase a re-keying kit for each brand of lock. Match the brand of lock to the re-keying kit. For instance, if you have two different brands of locks, you will need one re-keying kit for each brand.
- 2). Place the service key into the lock. The service key is provided with the re-keying kit.
- 3). Turn the service key. Pull the service key from the lock. When you pull the service key, the cylinder that the key is inserted into should separate from the lock. This cylinder is called a plug.
- 4). Turn the plug over a table surface to allow the old pins to fall from the plug. Remove the service key.
- 5). Place the new key from the re-keying kit into the plug. Use the color-coded chart in the re-keying kit to match the pins with the holes in the plug. Pick up the colored pins with tweezers and place them into the plug.
- 6). Reassemble the lock and test the new key to ensure it opens the lock.
