Chiari 1 Malformation Symptoms

    Pain

    • With Chiari type 1 the most common pain symptoms feel as though they originate in the neck. The pain may be constant and achy, and may primarily affect the base of the neck. In some cases you may experience pain that radiates down the shoulders and into the arms, but these are temporary sensations that can be uncomfortable but short-lived.

    Coordination

    • Some of the symptoms of Chiari type 1 involve your basic coordination skills. You may find it difficult to walk at times due to an inability to maintain your balance. You may begin to develop an unsteady pace to your gait which will make you appear uncoordinated. Your more refined motor skills may also be affected such as your hand-eye coordination. It may be difficult for you to pick up objects, or if you do pick something up you may find it difficult to hold on to it. Grabbing on to objects in motion may be extremely difficult if not impossible in some cases.

    Sensations

    • As the pain involved with Chiari type 1 continues, it may advance to the next level of nerve pain and start to tingle. You may begin to feel a tingling sensation in your hands or feet which would be similar to a series of small needles pricking at your skin. You may also experience random dizzy spells, and you may also find it difficult to talk and you could start to slur your speech.

    Choking

    • As Chiari type 1 advances and develops you may find yourself unable to control the muscles in your throat. You may start to develop difficulties in swallowing. You may even start to choke when swallowing, or you may start to feel nausea and experience vomiting as you are trying to swallow.

    Sleep Apnea

    • Chiari type 1 may cause symptoms similar to sleep apnea. You may start to feel drowsy during the day or unable to focus and that is because you are no longer sleeping through the night. Your breathing is stopping while you sleep and this prevents you from falling into a deep and refreshing sleep. It should be noted that sleep apnea could be an indication of many different conditions and that sleep apnea does not necessarily indicate the presence of Chiari type 1.
