- A vasectomy is a procedure in which the tubes that carry a man's sperm to his urethra are cut. The ends that are left are then closed to prevent sperm from being present in ejaculation.
- A procedure where a doctor will gain access to a woman's fallopian tubes, and either cut and tie the tubes, cauterize them or close them with a clamp. This stops a woman's eggs from being able to travel from her ovaries to her uterus.
- This is the removal of a woman's entire uterus and, in some cases, her ovaries as well. Once this procedure is done, a woman has no chance of ever becoming pregnant.
- This is a spring-like device that is inserted into a woman's fallopian tubes. A substance inside the device then irritates the lining of the tubes, creating scar tissue that over time will block the tubes, preventing the eggs from reaching the uterus.
- Since most of these methods require time to become fully effective, it is recommended that a second form of contraception be used.
