Taurine & Hair Loss

    Background

    • TGF-beta2 is a protein that leads to the death of cells within the hair follicles, resulting in hair loss and fibrosis. L-Taurine works by suppressing the effects of TGF-beta2 so that hair follicles remain undamaged.

    Abundance

    • L-Taurine is naturally occurring in food such as meat, eggs, fish and milk. Seafoods such as squid, octopus and clams contain the highest levels of taurine.

    Hair Mass

    • Inneov, a company owned jointly by L'Oreal and Nestle, produces a taurine-based product to combat hair loss in both men and women. It also contains omega 3 fatty acids and resveratrol and comes in pill form.

    Trials

    • In a test carried out by Inneov on 36 women with thinning hair, the company claims that all showed an improvement within just seven weeks of using its product. Within six months, all cases of thinning hair were apparently resolved.

    Shampoos

    • Taurine also is being used as an ingredient in shampoos that claim to stimulate hair growth. Rather than being taken orally, taurine is absorbed directly into the scalp and the hair follicle.
