- 1). Realize that you won't have enough speed to clear an approaching flat section, even if you're coming off a steep slope.
- 2). Begin skating before you stop if possible. The initial push is much easier with a little momentum.
- 3). Maintain a stance with your feet and skis shoulder width apart.
- 4). Plant your poles slightly ahead of your boots.
- 5). Push off with the inside edge of your right ski. Use the poles to increase your momentum. This motion will cause you to veer left.
- 6). Plant your poles again.
- 7). Push off with the inside edge of your left ski. Now you'll be moving to the right. As you skate, the tails of your skis will converge while your tips open up in a V shape.
- 8). Continue skating until you have enough speed to glide through the flat section.
