There is a lot about the mid-life crisis that is similar to those wild fluctuating years of adolescence.
There were a lot more unspoken expectations in those days in terms of how you defined yourself.
Did you play in the band? Or sports? Did you get good grades? Did you like yourself then? (I know, it's hard to remember, but that's not the important point) What is important is to begin to realize how pleasing others - parents, school teachers, friends - was defined in part by their spoken or unspoken expectations.
Starting with adolescence as you moved through those years you began to take on more of a personality and identity, shaped by other's expectations, as well as your own.
Many obvious choices fall out naturally as a consequence.
And here you are now - 30 years later, and wondering if that YOU that's been running the train for so long is the real YOU.
What are the hidden parts of your personality, what hidden gifts and talents do you have that you are eager to take out, dust off and maybe even share.
Maybe you did get a position in human resources and it has provided you with a regular paycheck, good working conditions, and a career track to progress through.
Now that you're reaching the 25 year mark, you may vaguely remember that there was a part of you that longed to be more of a star.
You really didn't like being behind the scenes, and now you're ready to honor the star within.
It's not too late to inventory your skills and re-write your goals.
Another characteristic of adolescence is the shifting energy levels you may be experiencing.
It's often hormonal, but the need to sleep is I find universal especially as the new ideas start to flow.
But don't let that discourage you.
Allow yourself to get the extra sleep you need.
Allow yourself to explore whether you're a day napper? Or do you push through until you're too exhausted.
As an adult you can make these choices, without too many people getting upset, as maybe they did when you were a teenager.
And finally, mid-life is like adolescence in that each of us has the opportunity to seek out a new identity based on the riches we find within.
What should you be looking for?
- A childhood dream that won't go away.
- A glimpse of a natural talent you had that didn't get encouraged.
- A special interest in the arts, or science or politics from some random act on your part.
- A collection of memorabilia that has meaning for you and maybe someone else.
Enjoy the rush of energy; feel excitement instead of fear; know that now you can really be all that you want to be.
