Bible Verses on Submission
Submission can be something difficult for us to conceive today. We are taught to be independent and stand up for ourselves. However, biblical submission is different. It comes from a place of faith - a trust in God. Here are some bible verses on submission to help us understand it a little better:
Submission to God
God asks us to humble ourselves before him and submit to His will:
James 4:7
So humble yourselves before God.
Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NLT)
Luke 22:42
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” (NIV)
1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. (NIV)
Romans 7:4
That is how it is with you, my friends. You are now part of the body of Christ and are dead to the power of the Law. You are free to belong to Christ, who was raised to life so that we could serve God. (CEV)
Jeremiah 17:10
I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds. (NASB)
Submission to Leaders
We’re not just asked to be submissive to God, which sometimes seems easier than submitting to people or authority:
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.
(NLT)
1 Peter 2:13-14
For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right. (NLT)
Submit to One Another
It’s not just leaders or God that require our submission. We need to learn to be submissive to one another in order to honor one another:
Ephesians 5:20-30
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. (NIV)
1 Peter 3:5-6
Long ago those women who worshiped God and put their hope in him made themselves beautiful by putting their husbands first. For example, Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her true children, if you do right and don’t let anything frighten you. (CEV)
1 Timothy 5:1-2
Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters. (NLT)
