How to Plant Grass in Florida

    • 1). Use a pH test kit to check the pH level of your soil. The ideal pH level is between six and seven. Raise the pH level by adding lime or reduce it by adding peat moss or sulfur.

    • 2). Till the soil to loosen it. Use a rake to remove any weeds, rocks or sticks.

    • 3). Apply fertilizer to the soil and work it in well with the rake. A small amount of fertilizer is all that is needed.

    • 4). Water the soil well with a sprinkler or garden hose for at least 20 minutes to ensure it is damp several inches down.

    • 5). Use a seed spreader to cover all of the soil with grass seed. Be sure to reach every bit of soil to avoid bare patches.

    • 6). Cover the planted area with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil. Water lightly to help the seed to soak in.

    • 7). Keep the soil moist with regular watering. Do not allow it to dry out until the grass is well established.
