- 1). Examine your current satellite receiver to verify what features it currently offers. To use a feature with satellite or cable service, your receiver not only needs to have the feature physically built into it but you also need to subscribe to the feature from your cable provider. It is possible, then, that your receiver has a feature built into it but you are simply not paying Dish Network for that feature, in which case upgrading your receiver would not be necessary as Dish can likely assign the feature to your account and remotely get it working on your current receiver.
- 2). Consider what features you will need in your new, upgraded receiver. For instance, if you wish to have an HD-capable receiver in order to use HD programming, but do not plan on subscribing to DVR service, it makes no sense to spend the possible extra cost on an HD DVR when all you need is an HD receiver. Decide what features you will need in your new receiver in light of the budget you have to work with before proceeding.
- 3). Contact Dish and schedule the equipment upgrade. Most likely, they will need to send an install technician to your home in order to install the new equipment.
