- The A-frame tent is a traditional camping tent originally used by soldiers, due to its simple design and components. A-frame tents use square or rectangle fabric supported by two poles. The poles are placed on the outer edge of the fabric in the middle of two sides. The opposite ends of the fabric are secured to the ground creating a structure that resembles the letter "A." The A-frame is a rustic type tent that does not have an attached floor or sides.
- Dome tents are commonly used for family camping trips. They feature a single fabric that consists of a floor with a dome style roof. Many models feature a zippered net door to keep bugs out and an open net roof with a rain fly. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes that will accommodate from 2 to 12 occupants. The dome is supported by criss-crossing support poles that attach to the bottom corners creating a self supported structure. It can be secured in place by tether lines and stakes for instances of high wind.
- Ridge tents feature a horizontal beam supported by vertical beams to create a ridge roof line. A fabric is stretched over the ridge beam and supported at the perimeter by poles. The perimeter poles are tensioned to the ground with tether lines from the top of the pole to a ground stake. Walls and a floor can be attached to the perimeter poles to create an enclosed space. Ridge tents easily accommodate large groups and can easily be adapted to winter camping with the addition of a wood stove. Additional uses include banquets and outdoor events such as weddings and graduation parties.
- Tunnel tents are small, lightweight tents used for backpacking and mountain climbing. The tunnel design allows them to withstand high winds due to the long narrow cavity that can be faced into the wind. The structure is supported by fold up sticks that run over the top, down the sides and secured by staked tie down lines. Tunnel tents take up minimal space and are available in one- or two-person models.
