- 1). Make sure your computer has at least one free USB port. You will need a port to connect your handheld credit card reader. Turn your computer on and log into it as a user with administrative rights.
- 2). Connect the square end of the USB cable to the back of the credit card reader, and connect the flat end of the cable to your computer's USB port. If a USB cable does not come with the credit card reader, you will need to purchase one separately.
- 3). Connect the power cord to the back of the credit card reader and plug it in. Watch the lower right hand corner of your computer screen for the "found new hardware" wizard. This is your indication that the operating system has found the credit card reader and is attempting to install the software for it.
- 4). Insert the installation CD that came with the credit card reader and install the software. This software will allow you to process credit card payments and read the information encoded on the cards' magnetic strips.
