Song Ideas for Childrens' Church Ministries

    Action Songs

    • Use action songs to help the children to get rid of their unused energy. Songs that get them up on their feet and moving around will get them interested in what will be taught later. Use songs such as "Father Abraham" (or "Sister Sarah" for the girls) and "I May Never March in the Infantry." For children with lots of extra energy, modify songs such as "If You're Saved and You Know It" and "Joy, Joy, Joy" to include more movements. Add "run in place" and "jump up and down" to "If You're Saved and You Know It." Add "body parts" to "Joy, Joy, Joy." Have the children express the joy they feel "down in their arms" as well as "down in their feet" by shaking their arms and stomping their feet.

    Teaching Songs

    • Add teaching songs to your children's church lesson plans. When teaching about Jonah or the importance of obeying God, have the children sing "Go Jonah." Sing "This Little Light of Mine" when teaching children about God and their faith with others. Many songs are taken directly from the Bible, such as "Therefore the Redeemed," which is found in Isaiah 51:11, and "Beloved, Let Us Love," which is from John 7:7-8. Remember to sing the books of the Bible when teaching children the names of the 66 books in the Bible.

    Calming Songs

    • Use calming songs to prepare the children for a lesson or before they are dismissed to go home. This will help them to relax and ready them for the changes about to take place. Sing "Jesus Loves Me" as they take their seats to begin the lesson. Use the song "Jesus Loves the Little Children" as a good-bye song as the children are being picked up by their parents or guardians. Remember that an excellent alter call song is "Come Into My Heart, Dear Jesus" when your children's church offers the children the opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior.
