What Is the Mother of the Bride Supposed to Wear?

Take special care when choosing the color of the dress. Before deciding on a dress, find out what color the wedding party will be wearing. The mother of the bride may go with a similar shade to the bridesmaids' dresses. Though the dress doesn't have to be the exact same color as the bridesmaids' dresses, don't select a color that clashes with them. By doing this, everyone will coordinate in the wedding pictures. Both the mothers of the bride and the groom should make sure that their dresses don't clash. Select a color and style that suits each person individually.

    Colors to Avoid

    • A traditional bride's dress is generally some form of white. Therefore, steer away from white so as not take the attention away from the bride. Ivory and cream are also unacceptable colors. As the wedding day is a joyful occasion, it's best not to wear black. By avoiding black, the mother of the bride will not give the impression that she is dissatisfied with her daughter's choice of husband.

    Let the Bride Help

As it is the bride's big day, try to always be open to the bride's opinion as to style and color of the dress. By going shopping along with the bride, the mother of the bride makes sure that both are happy with her choice of dress. The bride may also show her mother examples of dresses she's found online or in magazines. However, while the bride's opinion is important, ultimately the mother of the bride needs to feel comfortable in her dress for the wedding.

    Comfort First

While her daughter's wedding day is an exciting event for the mother of the bride, it's also a lot of work. Between greeting guests at the ceremony and reception, attending to needs of the bridal party and dancing at the reception, the bride's mother will have her hands full. Therefore, comfort is key when choosing her outfit. Select a dress that is comfortable to move around in and shoes that will provide support throughout the entire day.
