- 1). Plan your trip during the early spring. The high season in Croatia is from late May through September. By planning your trip during the off season you will beat the crowds, enjoy lower prices and still be able to swim and tan at the beach. Most restaurants are open (though the discos are summer only affairs) and all hotels and apartment rentals will have lower rates.
- 2). Book your first night’s accommodations online or via telephone. There are many charming apartment and room rentals in Hvar that are quite affordable. However, while the prices are almost all uniform, the quality of the room varies wildly. Book your first night so you don’t end up sleeping on the beach and can unwind from your travels, but it is highly recommended to book your accommodations for the rest of the trip once you are on the island. Houses with rooms will advertise themselves with a small placard that says sobe (room). Just knock on the door to talk with the owner, view the room and negotiate a price.
- 3). Fly into Split, a large Croatian port city. Take the Croatian Airlines shuttle to the harbor.
- 4). Purchase a ticket to the town of Hvar on the Jadrolinija ferry. Clarify that you want a ticket for the town of Hvar because some ferries go to other parts of the island.
- 5). Once you arrive in Hvar your work is done! Enjoy the beach and the sun! All of the main sites are visible from the historic town square!
