- Tab-top curtains are just what the name implies. They are curtains that have a tab top, which can be plain, bow tie or button. Plain tabs have loops on the top of the curtain that slide over the curtain rod. Bow tie tabs tie over the curtain rod for a more decorative look. They are especially nice in a bedroom. Button tabs fold over the rod and then button on the front of the curtain for another decorative detail.
The tabs are located on each end of the panel and then approximately 8 inches apart across the panel. Tab-top curtains are streamlined; there are no ruffles or fluff with these curtains. They are informal. They come in a variety of materials. Cotton twill is popular because it is informal in appearance and the material hangs well from the tabs. Tab-top curtains can be made of sheer material such as voile. Some have acrylic form on polyester/cotton to provide insulation. Tab-tops are available in most drapery fabrics. They even come with different colored tabs for a varied look. - Tab-top curtains serve a number of functions. They are informal for a casual decor. Because the taps or loops are large, the curtain easily moves across the curtain rod for easy closing and opening. Because the tabs only cover the rod, decorative rods, woodwork and window trim are more noticeable. Tab-tops can be any length. Valances just add a touch of decor to a room without obstructing the view. Two narrow panels on the side add style without obstructing light. Wider, insulated panels stop drafts when closed.
- Before purchasing curtains, measure from the top of the curtain rod to the desired length. Tab-tops look fine whether they hang to the bottom of the window or to the floor. If you wish to close the curtains, measure the width from the outside window trim and multiply two to three times the number. If your width is 50 inches, you want two panels that total 100 to 150 inches. You want your curtains to have fullness when closed. If the curtains are going to be open, the panel width is not important.
When you hang the tab-tops, it is easiest to slide the loops over the curtain rod whether they are plain, button or bow tie tabs. The bow tie tabs can be adjusted once they are on the curtain rod.
When purchasing tab-top curtains, opt for solid colors or simple patterns. You do not want your curtains competing with the beauty of a decorative curtain rod or nice woodwork.
