What is Defragmentation of Files?

    Function

    • Defragmentation is the process of scanning your file system and rearranging or reallocating storage. This means moving portions of files around in order to put the split files back into consecutive pieces that your computer can read more quickly.

    Significance

    • Defragmenting your computer is one of the best ways to increase performance and speed on your PC by keeping it healthy. The read/write heads will not have to travel as far to read a file, because instead of the parts of the file being physically stored in other locations, they will be stored next to each other. Defragmenting will speed up data retrieval.

    Software

    • Defragmentation software is included with your PC. Only administrators can defragment a volume, and how to run the software will depend on what system you are running. The time it takes the software to defragment files will depend on how much you have used your PC since the last defragmentation. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours for defragmentation to complete.
