How to Discourage Bird Nests

    • 1). Physically remove the nest from its location. Please note that it is illegal to remove a nest that has eggs in it, as per the Migratory Bird Treaty Act . According to Hawkeye Bird Control, if the nest does not have eggs in it, removing the nest can prevent birds from imprinting so that birds do not continually return to that site. Commonly, it is after the second removal of the nest that a bird will be adequately discouraged, and will not return to your location again.

    • 2). Get a pet. Having a dog or cat occasionally roam your front yard will prevent a bird from making a nest nearby, as they will see it as too disruptive and unsafe. A pet can also be used to scare away the bird before it lays eggs, thus giving you an opportunity to remove the nest. If you cannot get a pet, try placing a statue of an owl or a cat nearby, as the birds will recognize it as a predator.

    • 3). Alter the locations that birds are attracted to. Place netting over inlets in roofs or windowsills. Another option is to put spikes on windowsills or rooftop ledges where birds tend to perch. Sonic bird deterrents emit sounds that are irritating but do not harm birds. Electric tracks also do not harm birds, but will deter a bird from landing on an electrified spot by giving them a slight shock.
