- 1). Identity your problem or issue. Without a clear understanding of your problem, consulting the appropriate policies and procedures for resolution will be difficult. Gather as many facts from as many different sources as you can. For example, if an employee has been accused of stealing money from your business, ask the employee as well as others who may have information relating to the incident questions about what they know. Take down notes when interviewing each person. Seek clarification for missing facts and issues that are not clear.
- 2). Locate your business employee, corporate or organizational policy manual. If a business or organization has established policies and procedures, they will be published in a manual. Most managers should have received a copy of company policies and procedures when they were hired. If you cannot locate a policy and procedure manual, contact your corporate human resources or legal department. If you work for a smaller company without corporate departments, ask the owner of the business for a copy of the company's policies and procedures.
- 3). View the table of contents of the policy and procedure manual. Typically there are separate sections dealing with specific employee, customer, and safety issues. Locate the section that is most relevant to your issue or problem. Turn to the relevant section and read the policies and procedures that pertain to your issue. If you have questions or are unclear as to what certain terms or policies mean, consult your company's legal department or company owner.
