What Does a Torn Achilles Tendon Feel Like?

    Function

    • The Achilles tendon connects the heel bone with the muscles of your calf and lower leg. The tendon is made up of strong, fibrous connective tissue.

    Achilles Tendon Tear

    • A rupture of the Achilles tendon occurs with a sudden increase of stress put on the tendon. This can occur from falling or sometimes even running. For this reason, most Achilles tendon tears occur in athletes.

    Immediate Symptoms

    • As the injury occurs, you may hear a pop or snapping sound. Additionally, you will feel immediate pain and swelling in your leg. The feeling will mimic that of being kicked.

    Other Symptoms

    • Aside from the pain and swelling, there are other signs for knowing you have a torn Achilles tendon. After the injury, you will be unable to bend your foot downward or push off the injured leg to walk. Additionally, you will not be able to stand on your toes.

    Treatment

    • Surgery is the most common treatment to ensure a proper recovery. The operation involves stitching the tendon back together. Other treatments include wearing a walking boot, but this can lead to a longer recovery and a higher likelihood of reinjury.
