- One of the most obvious dangers related to lawn grubs is to the health of your grass. Patches of brown grass may begin to appear when there are too many grubs feeding on the roots of the grass. The brown spots in your lawn will usually be irregular in shape and will be most noticeable in the middle of the summer. Pesticides are available to treat lawns for grubs. Some may contain toxic chemicals, so check the labels to be sure you want to put these items on your grass where pets or children play.
- Plant damage is the primary danger of grubs in the lawn. Not only do they feed on the roots of the grass on your lawn, they will later be responsible for damage done to other plants. When the grubs mature they will become beetles. Species such as the Japanese beetle are very destructive to ornamental plants. They feed on the leaves and petals of the plants and can make a garden look terrible in no time. Although eliminating grubs will help lower the local population of the beetles, they do fly and may still come from neighboring properties to feast on your flowers.
- Grubs do their damage by feeding on plants, but other animals love to feed on the grubs. A lawn with a big population of grubs is a prime feeding site for these animals that love to dig their claws into your manicured turf. Skunks and raccoons are examples of animals that will dig up grubs in your lawn to eat them and do tremendous damage to your yard. Moles are sometimes fans of grubs as well, and their presence can only encourage moles to come around your property. More animals such as skunks and raccoons also means more chances for fleas, ticks and diseases carried by the animals.
- You will find grubs in many lawns, and sometimes their presence goes completely undetected. So you may be wondering how many is too many. If you dig up one square foot of your lawn you will know whether you need to be concerned. A lawn can grow normally without many ill effects if there are only four to six grubs per square foot. Just count them and if your number is less than this there is no need for concern. If you have 10 or more, you probably need to eradicate the pests.
