- Maintain a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Too much carbohydrates and fats slow the brain down.
- Eggs, milk, meat and fish are good sources of brain friendly protein.
- Vegetables such as cabbage, turnip, broccoli and cauliflower combined with beans, chickpeas and other legumes make excellent salads and can aid in brain function. Carrots and potatoes have higher G.I.
- Fruits with both pulp and juice take longer to be absorbed and therefore have lower G.I. levels than strained fruit juices. Therefore eat the whole orange and enjoy an apple instead of apple juice. Eat berries, grapefruit, apples, cherries, oranges, and grapes as these are nutritious, yet have low G.I.
- Dark green vegetables contain iron needed to carry oxygen to the brain cells. Sodium, potassium and calcium are contained in most nuts, seeds and vegetables and are essential to the thinking process.
- Avoid processed foods and foods with high G.I. such as white bread, sugar, soda drinks, sugar coated cereal and soft bananas. Take less fried foods, margarine and baked products.
