- 1). Fill a perforated gardening container with your choice of growing medium. Potting mixes and peat moss are better choices than soil that may contain weed seeds and soil-borne diseases. Leave 1/2 to 1 inch at the top of the container to prevent water from spilling from the container.
- 2). Add small amounts of fertilizer to the soil before planting to promote growth and encourage plants to produce better flavor and aroma. Use a low-grade chemical fertilizer or add nutrient-rich compost and manure to your potting mix.
- 3). Plant seeds of medicinal herbs such as lavender, chamomile, cinnamon and horsetail. Follow directions included on seed packaging for optimal spacing and seed planting depth.
- 4). Place the seeded containers outdoors or indoors on a window sill. Choose a sunny, south or west-facing window or outdoor location to satisfy the high sunlight requirements of most herbs.
- 5). Water the container herb garden as often as necessary to keep the surface soil moist, with a feel similar to a wrung-out sponge. Container gardens will drain water quickly and may require watering more than once each day.
