How to Make a PVC Strawberry Planter

    • 1). Acquire a piece of PVC pipe that is approximately 4 inches in diameter and 16 to 24 inches in length. If this length is not available, you may cut a longer piece to the desired length with a hacksaw, taking care to file the edges gently with a file or light sandpaper. A length shorter than 16 inches would not be recommended as there would not be room for more than a couple of strawberry plants.

    • 2). Bore holes in the length of pipe using a 1 1/2-inch drill bit. Start with a row of three holes spaced evenly apart. Turn the pipe 90 degrees and drill another set of holes, except this time only drill two holes. Drill these two holes by spacing them between the 3 holes you previously drilled. Next, turn the pipe another 90 degrees and drill a row of three holes. Make these holes even with the other row of three holes you previously drilled. Turn the pipe again and drill another row of two holes, keeping them in line with the other row of two holes you previously drilled.

    • 3). Add an end cap to one end of the pipe and secure it with PVC cement. Use an 1/8-inch drill bit and drill four small holes into the top of the end cap to allow for water drainage. At the other end of the pipe, you will need to drill three holes with the 1/8-inch drill bit for the chain to hang. Drill these so the pipe is divided into three equal sections to ensure the planter hangs evenly.

    • 4). Slide the S-shaped hooks into the holes at the top of the planter. Cut three lengths of chain or wire to the length you desire, making sure all three segments of chain are the same length. Secure the chain onto the S-hook. Take a larger S-hook and fasten it into the tree or post where you plan to hang your planter. Loop the three lengths of chain into the bottom of this S-hook and allow the planter to hang freely.

    • 5). Add potting soil to the planter, but do not pack too tightly. Water the soil lightly from the top of the planter. Add strawberry plants by taking the plant by the roots along with any soil that is present and placing it into the holes that were drilled in the length of your planter. Your plants will hang nicely, yet be supported by the PVC as they grow into mature plants, bearing fruit for you and your family to enjoy.
