Guide Review - The Silver Caboose Restaurant and Soda Fountain
My husband and I stumbled upon The Silver Caboose Restaurant and Soda Fountain during a recent visit to Collierville's Historic Town Square. It was so charming and quaint that we decided to stop in for a quick lunch.
We were immediately led to a table with a clear view of the restaurant's old fashioned soda fountain. And while the soda fountain was the restaurant's focal point, model trains and old photographs of historic Collierville completed the decor.
Our waitress greeted us soon after we were seated and told us about the specials of the day.
The daily specials include your choice of one meat and two vegetables for $10.95. That was a little pricier than what I would typically expect to find at a home cooking establishment. My husband and I weren't looking for a big meal anyway, and the sandwiches were a little more reasonably priced. We each ordered a cheeseburger and fries. When the burgers arrived, we were surprised at their size -- at least a third of a pound of lean ground beef. And these were not mass produced frozen patties, either. Based on their slightly irregular shapes, these burgers were clearly formed by hand. They were served on toasted sesame seed buns with hot crispy fries on the side.
My husband and I were both very full when we had finished the meal, but we couldn't resist ordering a slice of chocolate chess pie to share. Wow! That was one of the most delightfully decadent desserts I have ever had the pleasure of savoring. If you ever find yourself within a five mile radius of The Silver Caboose, you must stop in for the chocolate chess pie, if for no other reason.
Overall, we had a nice casual meal in a cheerful environment that was reminiscent of times past. We will definitely eat there again.
