- General Motors unveiled its Saturn model in 1991, redesigning the compact sedan in 1996 to feature a new exterior, daytime running lights, and sequential-port fuel injection, which triggers each injector nozzle independently, improving efficiency and reducing harmful emissions. The 1998 Saturn was available in seven trim levels: the SL, SL1 and SL2 sedan, SC1 and SC2 coupe and SW1 and SW2 wagon.
- All trim levels for the 1998 Saturn featured a four-cylinder, 1.9-liter engine, but horsepower varied among the trims. The SL, SL1, SC1 and SW1 trims produced 100 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 114 ft-lb of torque at 2,400 rpm. The SL2, SW2 and SC2 delivered 124 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 122 ft-lb of torque at 4,800 rpm.
- All 1998 Saturn trim levels had a five-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy for the SL, SL1 and SL2 sedan trims, and the SC1 and SC2 coupe trims, was between 23 miles per gallon in the city and 36 miles per gallon on the highway. The SW1 and SW2 wagon trims had a fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
- The SL, SL1 and SL2 trim levels had five-passenger seating with front headroom of 39.3 inches, front legroom of 42.5 inches, rear headroom of 38 inches and rear legroom of 32.8 inches. The SC1 and SC2 trims had four-passenger seating with front headroom of 38.5 inches, front legroom of 42.6 inches, rear headroom of 35.7 inches and rear legroom of 31 inches. The SW1 and SW2 trims had five-passenger seating with front headroom of 39.3 inches, front legroom of 42.5 inches, rear headroom of 38.7 inches and rear legroom of 32.8 inches. Standard features on all trim levels included bucket seats, stereo system, cloth seating and tilt steering.
- The SL, SL1 and SL2 trims of the 1998 Saturn were four-door sedans with a length of 176.9 inches, a width of 66.7 inches and a height of 54.5 inches. Curb weight was between 2,274 and 2,392 lb. The SC 1 and SC2 trims were two-door coupes with a length of 180 inches, a width of 67.3 inches and a height of 53 inches. Curb weight was 2,380 lb. The SW1 and SW2 trims were four-door wagons with a length of 176.9 inches, a width of 66.7 inches and a height of 55.6 inches. Curb weight was 2,380 lb for the SW1 trim and 2,453 lb for the SW2 trim. Standard features on all trims included tinted glass, daytime running lights and a rear window defroster.
