- 1). Wrap an old hand towel several times around the stem that protrudes from the shower wall.
- 2). Position the mouth of a pipe wrench over the stem, at about the center of the stem length. Place it where the hand towel is wrapped to avoid damaging the stem. Tighten the wrench until it is tight enough to be wiggled without budging.
- 3). Wrap plumber's tape around the threading at the end of the stem in an even, single layer.
- 4). Hold the handle of the wrench steady to keep the stem still. Use your other hand to thread the open end of the shower head onto the threading at the end of the stem. Tighten it as much as possible with your hand.
- 5). Keep your non-dominant hand on the wrench that holds the stem in place and use your other hand to tighten the head with the other pipe wrench.
- 6). Remove the wrenches and towel. Your shower faucet is ready to use.
