  Swelling in horses could be caused by a number of things, such as overexercise, injury or allergic reactions. Treatment depends on the severity of swelling, location and whether or not the condition is a symptom of an underlying issue. The typical process for minimizing swelling requires several products that are offered by numerous brands.
  
  

Liniments and Astringents

• Liniments and astringents are the most common products used to reduce swelling. They come in a variety of types, such as liquid and gels. The liniment Vetrolin is perhaps the most commonly used. Gels can be rubbed along the swollen area, whereas liquids may be sprayed. In some cases, owners may give their horse a liniment bath by mixing Vetrolin with water and applying it to the horse's body with a sponge.
  
  Astringents such as rubbing alcohol and witch hazel are also beneficial, as they increase circulation to the swollen area. These can be applied directly to the swollen area and perform similarly to liniments. These products can be purchased at general stores and through veterinarian supply dealers.
  
  

Medicated Poultices

• Medicated poultice is also a popular product for reducing swelling. A poultice containing menthol and Epsom salt is best, as it increases circulation and draws fluid out through the skin. Generally, a poultice should be left on overnight to be effective, and compression wraps may be used with a poultice to increase effectiveness.
  
  

Compression Wraps and Boots

• The most expensive option is to purchase cold compression boots or wraps for swelling in the legs, or a body compression suit for the larger areas of the horse. These cold compression products support the body while applying pressure to minimize swelling, and many contain ice packs that can be stored in a freezer. Ice packs are beneficial, because they are effective in reducing swelling.
  
  An example of a product for swollen legs is the HR Medics Cold Boot. If benign swelling is a continuous issue, investing in a cold compression boot or wraps can be a cost-effective option. Wraps also are available, such as the Ice Tape Cold Therapy Leg Wrap. These are kept either in ice water or in a freezer until needed and can be wrapped directly around your horse's legs for treatment.
