The Duties Of Audio Technician In A Job Setting

The basic duties of Audio Visual Technician in Audio Visual Department or unit is to assist in planning and implementation of various faculty equipment maintenance.
Based on the need of faculty and staff, the technician should determine type of equipment which should be installed in classroom, lecture hall or other departments and the brand of equipment which will best meet the needs for permanent installation.
He should participate in the planning and updating of equipment by providing input on technical system needs.
He should be able to determine what must be designed when specific equipment cannot be purchased; prepares recommendations to replace or purchase new equipment; advices faculty or staff on technical quality of audio visual equipment for use in planning equipment purchases.
He should set up systems for audio and video recording.
Maintenance and Repairs He should perform preventive maintenance to permanently installed equipment to assure proper functioning.
The service material /equipment that must be on ground are; volt meters, oscilloscopes, service manuals, and hand tools to trouble shoot equipment problems and make mechanical or minor electrical repairs to equipment He will make recommendations for major repairs or equipment replacement when needed.
Relationship with Others A technician should be in contact with faculty and staff on a regular basis to provide advice and consultation on equipment purchases and preventive maintenance measures, in solving problems regarding audio visual use or in planning and designing special audio visual equipment projects.
He should contact vendors occasionally by telephone or in person to check prices and availability of parts and to order equipment and supplies.
Finally, audio visual technician should be well skilled in the operations of all these equipment; multimedia projectors, public address system (PAS) overhead projectors (OHP), Computers, Document projector and should be able to handle and manipulate video camera.
He should duplicate audio and video tapes; make audio recordings and video tapes of conferences, seminars, lecturers, clinical or other activities requested by staff.
He is responsible for the day to day operations of a language or video laboratory including a library of instruction materials.
Audio visual can be defined as the medium of presentation and its inputs are, (PAS), (OHP) (MMP) Document projector slide projector and computer.
Distinguishing Features This is the level at which he is distinguished from the lower levels by being involved in determining equipment and systems requirements and acting as consultant to faculty and staff in the planning and design of new systems.
He marks and identifies new equipment; maintain up-to-date records of where audio visual equipment is located and the condition of the equipment.
He maintains a current record of all supplies on hand; projects supply needs and prepare purchase requests.
