It is knowing what your end game is-and planning how you will achieve it.
Having a purpose is the essence of being a success in life.
Why? Purpose helps you to set goals that will continually advance you toward your life plan.
Without it you will just drift.
Now, how does having a purpose work in public speaking? As a public speaker set goals for your speech.
Be clear about what you want your audience to learn, discover or do.
Establish your take home message that your audience will recall after your presentation is over.
All of these things fall within the realm of purpose.
Finding the Purpose of Your Speech Before you write your speech decide what your purpose will be.
This can be achieved by figuring out what your speech will be about, which can be done by identifying:
- Your talents
- Areas of interest
- What you dream about being, doing, or places you desire to go?
- What things need to be improved?
- The things that worry or concern you
- Who your hero's are and why?
For example your topic is "I like the Caribbean.
" Which part of the Caribbean do you like? Is it Trinidad, Jamaica, the Bahamas or some place else? Your topic needs to be more specific.
What is it about the Bahamas you like? The food? The people? The culture? The beaches? The music? Take time to narrow your topic down until it is manageable-what you can cover in sufficient detail in a five to ten minute speech or the allotted time that you have been given.
Set Goals Set goals for your speech.
Decide what's the most important thing you want your audience to remember or do.
Outline how you will get them to remember the information or how you will get them to take the desired action.
List it step by step.
Plant seeds within your speech that will grow within your listener.
Look ahead-give them resources that they can follow up on the seeds you planted in your speech.
This could include a website, a book, a conference, an article etc.
Encourage them to learn more and to get involved.
Having a purpose in life helps to give you direction, set goals, have a focus, and to implement your vision.
Having a purpose for your presentation will ensure that you achieve your public speaking objectives.
