- 1). Plugin the MIDI controller to your computer using the USB cable. If Reason is not already running, then start Reason.
- 2). Launch the Reason application. Reason will automatically detect your MIDI controller and ask you to confirm that you want to use it as your primary controller. Choose Yes and set your MIDI controller as the primary controller. If Reason does not automatically detect your controller, go to the Preferences Settings > Keyboards and Control Surfaces and add it using the software driver that came with your controller.
- 3). Test the default settings for your controller by selecting a synthesizer in your rack (create one if your rack is empty) and then strike a few keys to see if the synthesizer plays the corresponding notes. Most automatically detected MIDI controllers will also map knobs and sliders automatically so try a few of those out as well. Most basic and intermediate users will find default settings sufficient for their needs, however live performers usually need to setup some customized controls.
- 4). Right-click on any element in Reason--knobs, buttons, sliders, whatever--and assign it to an element of your controller. This is how you customize your controller settings to your liking.
