Krewe Of Orpheus

The Krewe Of Orpheus:

Named for the mortal Orpheus, son of Apollo and Calliope Orpheus was founded in 1993 by New Orleanian Harry Connick Jr. Naturally, this parade is renowned for its musical themes, and is one of the largest and already, best beloved, of the Carnival season. It is an inclusive membership, meaning you don't have to be from an old society family to belong.

Monarchs of Orpheus have included such stars as Glenn Close, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, Dan Ackroyd, and Travis Tritt.

It has about 30 floats, including Smokey Mary, a huge Trojan Horse, and a 139-foot "Leviathan."

Throws:

This is a generous group, who throw beads, cups and doubloons. Especially sought after are the specialty beads and doubloons from Smoky Mary and Leviathan.

When:

Orpheus always rolls on Lundi Gras. In 2008, that's February 4th, at 5:45pm, this parade travels the traditional St. Charles Avenue route.
