- Chautauqua Airlines was established in 1973 with two Beech 99 aircraft, each with a nine-person capacity. Originally based in Jamestown, N.Y., the airline had a code-sharing agreement with Allegheny Airlines and operated flights from Jamestown to Buffalo and Pittsburgh as "Allegheny Commuter." Over the next three decades, the company grew steadily, winning contracts from major carriers to fly commuter and express services between large airports.

- Most of Chautauqua's routes are concentrated in the northeastern part of North America, but some of the company's routes take them farther afield from the popular airline's hubs of Chicago, Washington, New York and (especially for Delta Express) Cincinnati. The airline also operates flights to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Kingston, Jamaica and Monterrey, Mexico.

The company also operates jets for Mokulele, a Hawaiian airline.
