When Gutenberg created the first printing press with movable type, it was in many ways the start of the modern era. Text is perhaps the single most important element in modern civilization. Reading and writing are such fundamentals of modern life that they are taken for granted. The advantages provided by digital printing are often overlooked as the technology has further changed the way people live and work in very basic ways. - With older printing techniques it was necessary to physically change the plates for every change that was to be made on the printed page. With a digital printer, changes can be made instantaneously for every page. This saves a great amount of cost and time, particularly in large-scale printing operations. The digital printer is a much more flexible tool. A user can take advantage of this by making quick changes to documents digitally without fuss.
- When using older printing techniques it is necessary to constantly monitor the pages being printed for consistency of ink and letter placement. This wastes a lot of time and paper as many copies have to be disposed of and human intervention is necessary. Digital printers, by contrast, are remarkably consistent in the copies they print and can be left mostly unmonitored, if fully supplied, as they print out copy after identical copy.
- Digital printers have brought to the average individual techniques that were once only available to the large-scale publisher. Using computer software an individual can design complex documents with sophisticated fonts and perfect letter placement as well as images. A small and affordable digital printer is all that is then necessary to print out physical copies of these digital documents. This advantage has revolutionized many offices and workplaces around the world.
