Remember the days when CDs first came out? I do to, it was great! I thought that the sound was a hundred times better that an old tape! I remember going round to my friend's house and listening to a Fleetwood Mac CD, I was amazed! I went home and said to my parents - CDs are great! Can we get one? After seeing it at my friend's house, I also remember seeing it on TV on a program called Tomorrows World. The guys on Tomorrows World showed you all the new gadgets coming out, and CDs were on the program. One of the benefits (or so they said) of a CD was the durability of them. I remember seeing the presenter smearing jam all over a CD, wiping it off and then putting it back in the machine! It worked fine.
Fast forward several years and I am not so convinced about the durability of CDs or DVDs, I have a huge stack of DVDs and only a few of them work 100%. Some of the DVDs are quite a few years old, and yes, they actually can get scratched! They are not as durable as people made them out to be!
If you are new to the IT scene, then I would strongly avoid using a DVD as a backup method. Online storage is the way to go. Luckily, all of the data I have on my DVDs is not very important, so I am not that concerned. Some of the data I have today, I would not dream of keeping it on a DVD. In 2 or 3 years time, a DVD may let you down in terms of storage. It is really hard to say how long your DVD is going to last.
