Almeria's Cabo de Gata to the outside world has been associated with the films seen on the silver screen, but did you know it is one of the most sought after tourist's spots in southern Spain! Although it is a small town, with a modest past, this resort is quaint and serene, with beautiful beaches to its name and wonderful horizons that bid goodbye to the sun every evening.
If you would like to get to Cabo de Gata from Almeria, it is suggested that one hops onto the local buses that run from Almeria City or even better hire a car at Almeria airport.. The only stopover en route would be at a junction called the Retamar, a place popular with expats and retired people, who seek peace whilst they holiday. As you enter Cabo de Gata, be prepared to get embraced by the royal blueness of the famous Laguna de Rosa Lake. Right at this place, feast your eyes on flamingos and other wild bird species. If you fancy a quick bite and a sip of hot brewing local coffee, you wouldn't be left high and dry or hungry. Fish lovers would love to know there is a thriving fish market around, so enjoy digging into the delicacies, later in the evening.
It is tough to find cheap rentals at Cabo de Gata, especially when the peak season arrives, but in general prices are lower than the more famous Costa del Sol. The small modest town doesn't have many hostels and the two famous ones are the Mediterraneo Bar and the Playa bar, both located on the beaches of the town and would charge you a bomb for the kind of basic services on offer. But for the budget conscious traveller, all hope isn't lost, the Calle Barrionnueva, the Hostal Las Dunas, and the Cabo De Gata camping areas are apt for the money spending conscious travelers. The beaches are windy, especially when the sun is at its peak and hence if you feel like a drink, get to Salt Pans or even the Las Salinas and quench your thirst and hunger with local delicacies on offer.
From Cabo de Gata one has San Jose close by. San Jose as you may know is a resort popular to many travellers, the world across. The sandy beaches of San Jose and the exotic coves housing shallow pools, is a prime attraction. But we recommend booking for accommodation in advance, since the peak season would prove to be a challenge for you to find a hotel to stay in. Camping Tau is a nice place to stay, if you are looking for economical rentals and that too on the beaches of San Jose. It has everything you want, food, drink, wine, dine, and shopping centers as well, so quite a good bet for your money spent.
Finally, when visiting Cabo de Gata, take a day to cruise around Los Escullos. This would take you up the beach and you would find one of the most expensive rentals, such as the Casa Emilio that sits on the beach and has all you need. You can also visit the Redalquilar mines, all in all plenty to do for at least a week. Visit Cabo de Gata!
