What is there to do in Algonquin?
  • Biking
  • Boating
  • Canoeing
  • Fishing
  • Picnicking
  • Snowmobiling
  • Swimming
  • Wildlife Watching

This is list is certainly not exhaustive, but it should give you an idea of what to expect when vacationing in Algonquin. While the park does have plenty of room for lodging, there is nothing wrong with a day trip. What makes Algonquin a better suited park for daily ventures is that it is located close to Toronto and Ottawa. A short commute means you can spend all day in the park and still be home in time for dinner! Many of Ontario's provincial parks are remote and only accessible by boat, train or plane. In this sense, you can think of Algonquin as the ideal tourist spot, because it allows visitors to come and go as they please. There is no need to hassle with reservations if you don't want to.

A very popular pastime that many people do in Algonquin is biking. There are many trails throughout the park that you can ride on, and all of them offer a wealth of nature viewing experiences. Surrounded by a pristine landscape and wildlife in its most natural state, there is no quicker way to escape the urban lifestyle for a little while.

While you cannot take a motorboat on the lakes in the park, there are exceptions for boating enthusiasts. Boats equipped with motors bearing less than 20 horsepower can be driven on most of the lakes. It is important to keep in mind, however, that activities like water and jet skiing are not permitted. There is no shortage of canoeing routes in the park either. Featuring over 2,100 kilometers of navigable waters, visitors can pick up brochures that detail specific routes and access points to aid them on their trip.

If you are interested in trout fishing, Algonquin Provincial Park is often called the best place in all of Canada for doing so. There are a number of other species present in the various lakes as well, and due to the park's smart conservation methods, there is no shortage of fish to be caught. Other popular activities in the park include picnicking, snowmobiling, swimming, and nature gazing. If you ever do decide to go camping, however, one of the most highly recommended camps in the park is Killarney Lodge. This camp offers visitors a full nature expedition while providing a cozy place to relax.
